Household Hazardous Waste

The City of West Sacramento has partnered with Yolo County to provide Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Drop-Off Days monthly at the Yolo County Central Landfill. Please click   here for the current drop-off days or call (866) 714-8470 for more information.

In addition, Sacramento Recycling and Transfer Station at 8491 Fruitridge Road is open Friday and Saturday from 8:00 am – 5:00 pm for acceptance of residential HHW material.

The landfill will accept used motor oil, filters and auto batteries 7 days a week.
Kragen Auto Parts accepts auto batteries, motor oil and oil filters for recycling and Autozone accepts auto batteries and motor oil for recycling. Call 1-800-RECYCLE for a current list of participating locations.


  Fluorescent light recycling:

IKEA accepts batteries and compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) during their normal business hours of 10am to 9pm M-Sun.  IKEA is located at 700 Ikea Ct. 

Home Depot accepts compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) only.  Home Depot is located at 690 Riverpoint Ct.  Please call (916) 617-2128 for store hours.

Supply Hardware located at 660 Harbor Blvd will accept CFLs and fluorescent tubes.  Please call (916) 372-1282 for store hours.


Sharps Disposal Information:
 

Sharps - Sharps include hypodermic needles, pen needles, intravenous needles, lancets, and devices used to penetrate the skin for the delivery of medications. Effective September 1, 2008 sharps are banned from landfill disposal. While supplies last, the City of West Sacramento is providing free collection containers to West Sacramento residents. There are two sharps container distribution points in West Sacramento. Each location has mail-back (please keep cardboard box as it contains the mail-back label) and non mail-back containers. The locations and distribution hours are listed below:

  • 2 containers per household
  • Senior and residents with disabilities are eligible for free pick-up of hazardous waste (paint, batteries, fluorescent lights), including sharps, so they may use the non mail-back type and call (866) 714-8470 to schedule a pick-up appointment when the container is full.
  • For those not eligible for pick-up, the non mail back containers must be taken to a household hazardous waste (HHW) drop-off event at the Yolo County Landfill, or to Sacramento Recycling & Transfer Station HHW facility. Information about these events is on the HHW flyer. If you need more HHW flyers, please call the Recycling Division at (916) 617-4590.
  • Once full, the mail back containers are mailed using the postage-paid box that the container comes in.
