Fluoride

On Monday May 19, 2008,
West Sacramento will begin
adding fluoride to its drinking water.

The City of West Sacramento, with over 11,000 customers, has obtained grant funding and must proceed with the fluoridation of drinking water. Since 1995, California communities with over 10,000 customers have been required under Assembly Bill 733 to fluoridate their drinking water supply if funding is available.

Once a water provider begins adding fluoride to its drinking supply, it must perform fluoride-specific monitoring and reporting. The Department of Public Health has determined West Sacramento’s optimal fluoride levels to be 0.8-1.2 ppm (parts per million). One ppm is equivalant to one teaspoon in 1,300 gallons of water - enough to fill an average bathtub more than 40 times.
