What is water fluoridation?
Fluoride is a naturally occurring element found in most water supplies. Water fluoridation is the addition of fluoride to adjust the concentration in the drinking water to bring it to the optimal levels that, according to the Department of Public Health, provide the most benefit for dental health.

How much fluoride is being added to the water?
The Department of Public Health has determined West Sacramento’s optimal fluoride level to be 0.8-1.2 ppm (parts per million). One ppm is equivalent to one teaspoon in 1,300 gallons of water - enough to fill an average bathtub more than 40 times.

Is fluoridated water safe?
Fluoridated water at the levels required by the Department of Public Health is safe. The City’s fluoride feed system will ensure that optimal levels of fluoride are present in the drinking water so additional fluoride supplements, such as fluoride tablets or vitamins, are no longer needed.

Is fluoridated water healthy?
The California Dental Association (CDA) recommends water fluoridation for all community drinking water systems because of the added health benefits. Fluoridated water has proven to reduce tooth decay by strengthening the outer layer of teeth and repairing teeth that have been damaged by acids.

Will children still need fluoride treatment?
Prescription fluoride and/or fluoride treatment may no longer be required for children who drink the recommended amounts of tap water. Consult your dental health care professional for more information.
