This information is provided to give you an overview of the recruitment and selection process in the City of West Sacramento.

Position Openings:
Applications are accepted only for positions that are currently open (posted). All job openings are posted in the City of West Sacramento's Human Resources Office, on our web site, and on our job line recording. The job flyer posted both in the Human Resources' Office and on the web site contain information regarding the job duties and qualifications, salary range, benefits, application and examination processes, and final filing date. Some positions will require additional documents, such as a resume, typing certificate, etc.

Job Line and Internet Access:
The City of West Sacramento has an information line, which is updated every Friday afternoon. The recorded message contains information on upcoming events, such as City Council and Commission meetings, as well as recruitment information. You may reach our 24-hour information line at (916) 617-4525. Detailed information, as well as our City application, may be obtained from our web site.

Recruitment Notice:
A job flyer is prepared for every regular position for which the City is recruiting. The flyer contains basic information, which should assist you in determining whether or not you feel qualified to apply. Additional information may be noted on the flyer regarding the type(s) of examination(s), which may be administered to determine the most qualified applicants. The flyer will also contain information regarding the salary range, benefits, and final filing date. Please review the flyer carefully to ascertain if the recruitment requires further documents such as a resume, typing certificate, etc. If the required additional documents are not provided by the final filing date, you could be disqualified from further consideration. When you complete a job application (and supplemental materials, if applicable) be sure to emphasize the skills, experience, and training that qualify you for the position for which you are applying. Keep a copy of all materials you submit; your application packet cannot be returned to you.

Employment Applications:
A City of West Sacramento application form must be completed for each position for which you are applying. A resume will not be accepted in place of a completed City application. Attach all information as requested on the job flyer, such as a valid typing certificate, resume, supplemental questionnaire, etc. Applications are not accepted beyond the final filing deadline. Postmarks are not accepted. Job flyers and City applications can be obtained in the Human Resources Office, or by sending a self-addressed, stamped envelope, indicating position desired, to the Human Resources Division, 1110 West Capitol Ave., West Sacramento, California 95691. Job Interest Cards:
If you are interested in a position that we are not currently recruiting for, you may file a job interest card in the Human Resources Office. Interest cards are kept on file for a period of one (1) year. If a recruitment opens for a position in which you have expressed interest, you will be notified. Unfortunately, we are unable to complete these cards "on-line." We hope to have this option available in the future.

The Employment Process:
As a potential applicant, you will be participating in a step-by-step process by which we obtain the most qualified candidates for employment. The process may include various examinations, which evaluate and objectively test each applicant's qualifications for the position. Examinations may be composed of one, or a combination of the following procedures. Please refer to the job flyer announcement for detailed information.

Application Appraisal:
The application is an important part of the examination process. It does play a significant role in determining your suitability for employment. All applications will be carefully and thoroughly evaluated for appropriate education, training, experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, and other personal qualifications, which directly relate to the duties of the position.

Supplemental Information:
Supplemental information, such as a questionnaire, work sample, typing certificate, resume, etc., may be required to be submitted at the time of application. Applications not accompanied by the information, when required, will not be accepted for consideration in the employment process.

Written Examination:
A written examination such as multiple choice, matching, true/false, fill in, computation, and/or narrative may be administered.

Performance Examination:
Applicants may be required to perform a series of simulated job tasks, which are representative of the duties of the position.

Oral Examination:
The most suitably qualified candidates may be invited to an oral interview examination, usually conducted by a three-member panel.

Eligibility List:
An eligibility list is established of all candidates who qualified in the examination process. Candidates are ranked from highest to lowest. Ranks can contain more than one candidate. Candidates with the same final score will be placed in the same ranking. The eligibility list is valid for a period of one year, or until exhausted, which ever occurs first. It is very important to keep the Human Resources Office informed of any address and/or telephone number changes. You will not be notified when the list is exhausted or expires.

Certification List:
The top five candidates on the eligibility list are certified and referred to the hiring department for its consideration. An additional five names will be certified to the department for each additional vacancy. The department will further examine the candidates to determine which candidate is best suited to meet the specific needs of the department.

Notification:
If you are not selected to continue in the recruitment process at any stage, you will be notified by mail. Likewise, if you will continue in the selection process. If your name is placed on a certification list, the hiring department will notify you by telephone and/or in writing to schedule a department interview and/or further examination.

Employment Eligibility Verification and Reference Checks:
The City of West Sacramento will require reference checking and documentation of a candidate's identity and authorization to work in the United States prior to finalization of employment.

Department Of Justice Fingerprint Clearance and Pre-Employment Physical:
Employment is subject to the candidate successfully passing a fingerprint check and pre-employment physical prior to placement at the worksite.

Background and CVSA Examination:
Prior to assignment at the Police Department, the candidate must successfully pass a background investigation, and certified voice stress analysis (CVSA) examination. The background investigation is required on all non-sworn Police Department personnel who will have access to the California Law Enforcement Telecommunications System (CLETS) equipment.
